Pear Cider and Cigarettes

I love Robert Valley’s animations with wide angle point of view creating this unique style. I first discovered his comics and I bought his sketchbooks when I was studying my BA in illustration. Later when planing to apply for MA in character animation I got more into his animations.

Here is few images from his Academy Award nominated Pear Cider and Cigarettes. I may write my animated documentary essay about it as the film and the graphic novel of the same name are based on a true story.

Funny frames.

This is a facial expression exercise.

Some of the in-between frames can be strange and funny. Animating makes me draw stuff I would never draw as an illustrator.

It is my 30th birthday today. Happy birthday to me.

Disturbed pickle.

‘I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe.’ – Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer)

My first ever lip-sync animation. From the options I picked a quote from the movie Blade Runner. I also received an Iron Giant toy thing for ‘guessing’ (google obviously) which movies the quotes are from and who are the actors saying them.

I animated eyes and mouth in TvPaint and I took a footage of the backgrounds in my kitchen using Nikon D750 that I used to use for event photography. I videoed a jar and a gherkin separately to be able to animate a cucumber. Later I composited final animation in After Effects. I found it very interesting and fast process combining footage and drawn animation.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.
